Tropicana Corporation Berhad Annual Report 2021

140 141 Annual Report 2021 TROPICANA CORPORATION BERHAD SUSTAINABILITY AT TROPICANA Waste Management Construction Waste Given the nature of our business, we produce construction waste as a result of our building development operations. Cognisant of the long term impact of improper waste management practices on the environment and society, Tropicana continues to practice responsible waste disposal methods that are in line with regulations enforced by local authorities. Our operations include the generation of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste which the Group stringently monitors via our project team to ensure sound waste management practices at our project sites are enforced. Further, the contractors we employ are required to strictly adhere to waste management and disposal practices outlined by the Department of Environment (“DOE”) throughout their contract with the Group. Any scheduled waste produced at our project site as a result of our operations are collected, stored and disposed by licensed contractors approved by the DOE. Recycling As general practice, we encourage recycling at all our operating areas via specialised recycling bins and reminders to avoid plastic use. This year, we continued our engagement with iCycle Malaysia to collect and recycle household waste at our key developments which include Tropicana Heights, Tropicana Metropark, Tropicana Aman, Tropicana Gardens and Tropicana Avenue. This ongoing initiative provides a platform for communities to recycle a variety of household waste that would have otherwise been a source of carbon emissions generated through conventional waste disposal practices. In FY2021, we successfully recycled 2,702 kg of waste and achieved an estimated 1,334 kg in carbon dioxide (CO2) savings through our collaboration with iCycle. Tropicana will continue to explore different waste management strategies as part of our wider goal to reduce or recycle waste throughout our value chain. Installation of the panels commenced in March 2021 and was fully operational by September 2021. A total of 2,214 solar photovoltaic (“PV”) panels were installed across 53,204 sqft of rooftop space at our TGCR clubhouse which is estimated to generate an average of 100,000 kWh of electricity per month. In addition to greatly reducing our electricity consumption via the conventional grid, this source of renewable energy is projected to achieve an estimated cost savings of up to RM10,000 in monthly utility bills. Driven by this success, the Group endeavours to further expand on initiatives that promote the use of renewable energy across our operations in the future. Over the years, we uphold our reputable brand standards and excellence by diligently adhering to local and national regulations; including regulations on environmental parameters. This commitment has led us to achieve a track record of zero significant fines and non-monetary sanctions related to environmental laws and regulations in FY2021. Moreover, our recent developments have successfully achieve certifications for building standards that emphasises on environmental stewardship. These accolades include the Green Building Index (“GBI”) and GreenRE certifications. To be recognised as GBI or GreenRE buildings, developers are required to implement sustainable site planning management throughout the construction phase of the project while also incorporate building features that prioritises energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality and more. We are proud to have been awarded these prestigious certifications for our Tropicana Gardens Development and Tropicana Metropark project phases as listed in the table.
