Tropicana Corporation Berhad Annual Report 2021

142 143 Annual Report 2021 TROPICANA CORPORATION BERHAD SUSTAINABILITY AT TROPICANA Environmental Initiatives Integrated Pest Management – Dragonfly Pond Project Our TGCR golf course is surrounded by lush greeneries to emulate a serene environment for our patrons to enjoy when they come to play the sport. Naturally, our humid and tropical climate is a conducive environment for pests such as mosquitoes to breed that consequently becomes a nuisance and threat to public health. To manage this, we embarked on a journey to adopt an integrated pest management (“IPM”) approach by utilising biological methods to reduce or eliminate pests rather than rely on harmful chemical products that could adversely impact the environment. Our Dragonfly Pond is a flagship project that was developed in September 2021 to breed and sustain a healthy dragonfly population at our golf course as a means to apply biological control on mosquitoes in the surrounding area. Dragonflies are known natural predators for mosquitoes and other insects, and is a commonly used IPM measure that is proven to be effective in the long term. It is our hope that this initiative effectively manages insect pests within TGCR grounds to create a comfortable and safe environment for our patrons to enjoy. Future Initiatives – Tree Replanting Our long term aspirations to embrace sustainable development extends to considerations for biodiversity conservation and protection. In the coming years, we plan to embark on a tree replanting programme at our Tropicana Cenang project located in Langkawi. Preliminary planning of the initiative includes the reinstatement of more than 200 trees, 150 palms and a variety of shrubs and climbers within our development area to create a modern resort concept that seamlessly integrates the beauty of the natural environment with high-end facilities for our guests and homeowners to enjoy. Paper Use Paper is a typical type of waste produced as a result of our operations due to its daily usage. Our architectural drawings and homeownership documentation makes up for most of our paper consumption practices for legal purposes which require physical copies for submissions and approvals. We aspire to progressively adopt digital avenues as a way to reduce paper usage in the long term. This is especially reflected in our T360 initiative as presented on Page 126 of this Sustainability Statement. To monitor our progress on reducing paper use, we initiated data tracking for our printing and paper procurement costs at the Group’s HQ. The FY2021 data presented in this statement serves as a benchmark for the Group to effectively set targets and formulate strategies that would ultimately reduce paper usage and the costs attributed to the practice. Note: Carbon dioxide (CO2) savings is the equivalent of amount of carbon emissions saved in kilograms (kg) for recycled waste products that would usually be disposed into landfills. The CO2 savings calculation was based on the criteria outlined by Jabatan Pengurusan Sisa Pepejal Negara (JPSPN) Malaysia data using the US-EPA calculator.
