Summary of significant accounting policies (continued) 2.23 Employee benefits (a) Short term employee benefits Wages, salaries, paid annual leave and sick leave, bonuses, and non-monetary benefits that are expected to be settled wholly within 12 months after the end of the period in which the employees render the related service are recognised in respect of employees’ services up to the end of the reporting period and are measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liabilities are settled. (b) Defined contribution plans The Group’s contributions to defined contribution plans are charged to profit or loss in the period to which they relate. Once the contributions have been paid, the Group and the Company have no further financial obligations. (c) Share-based payment The Group operates a number of equity-settled, share-based compensation plans under which the Group receives services from employees as consideration for equity options and awards over ordinary shares of the Company or for cash. Share options represent the right of an employee to receive share for a prescribed exercise price. Share awards represent the right of an employee to receive fully paid shares, free of charge, upon the Company achieving prescribed performance target(s). Equity-settled transactions The fair value of the share options and share awards in exchange for the services of the employees are recognised as employee benefit expense with a corresponding increase to share option reserve and share grant reserve within equity respectively. The total amount to be expensed is determined by reference to the fair value of the share options and share awards: - excluding the impact of any service and non-market performance vesting conditions (for example, profitability, sales growth targets and remaining an employee of the entity over a specified time period); and - including the impact of any non-vesting conditions. Non-market vesting conditions and service conditions are included in assumptions about the number of share options and share awards that are expected to vest. The total expense is recognised over the vesting period, which is the period over which all of the specified vesting conditions are to be satisfied. At the end of the reporting period, the Group revises its estimates of the number of share options and share awards that are expected to vest based on the non-market vesting conditions. It recognises the impact of the revision to original estimates, if any, in profit or loss, with a corresponding adjustment to share option reserve or share grant reserve in equity. When the share options are exercised, the Company issues new shares. The proceeds received net of any directly attributable transaction costs are credited to share capital when the share options are exercised. When share options are not exercised and lapsed, the share option reserve is transferred to retained earnings.
