EXCEL FORCE MSC BERHAD Annual Report 2018

70 ANNUAL REPORT 2018 3. Significant Accounting Policies (cont’d) (f) Financial assets (cont’d) Policy applicable from 1 January 2018 (cont’d) Financial instrument categories and subsequent measurement (cont’d) (b) Financial assets at fair value through other comprehensive income (i) Debt investments A debt investment is measured at FVTOCI if it meets both of the following conditions and is not designated as at FVTPL: • it is held within a business model whose objective is achieved by both collecting contractual cash flows and selling financial assets; and • its contractual terms give rise on specified dates to cash flows that are solely payments of principal and interest on the principal amount outstanding. The debt investment is not designated as at fair value through profit or loss. Interest income calculated using effective interest method, foreign exchange gains and losses and impairment are recognised in profit or loss. Other net gains and losses are recognised in other comprehensive income. On derecognition, gains and losses accumulated in other comprehensive income are reclassified to profit or loss. (ii) Equity investments This category comprises investment in equity investment that is not held for trading. The Group and the Company irrevocably elect to present subsequent changes in the investment’s fair value in other comprehensive income. This election is made on an investment-by-investment basis. Dividends are recognised as income in profit or loss unless the dividend clearly represent a recovery of part of the cost of investment. Other net gains and losses are recognised in other comprehensive income. On derecognition, gains and losses accumulated in other comprehensive income are not reclassified to profit or loss. The Group and the Company have not designated any financial assets as FVTOCI. (c) Financial assets at fair value through profit or loss All financial assets not classified as measured at amortised cost or FVTOCI, as described above are measured at FVTPL. This includes derivative financial assets (except for a derivative that is a financial guarantee contract or a designated and effective hedging instrument). On initial recognition, the Group or the Company may irrevocably designate a financial asset that otherwise meets the requirements to be measured at amortised cost or at fair value through other comprehensive income as at fair value through profit or loss if doing so eliminates or significantly reduces an accounting mismatch that would otherwise arise. Financial assets categorised as FVTPL are subsequently measured at their fair value. Net gains or losses, including any interest or dividend income are recognised in the profit or loss.
